“If not for this program, I would have been farming in the village. I would not have wanted more out of life. I never had any interest in computers, I had no idea what a computer looked like as l had never seen one neither had the opportunity to touch a computer ever come up until I was enrolled for the training. This program really changed my life for the better, completely”.
20 years old Godwill Okadu beams with pride as he narrates how SING ICT Training Program in Opume Community in Bayelsa state, transformed his life. While in secondary school Godwill diligently attended ICT skills training program after regular school and on weekends, building his knowledge in basic computer appreciation and graphics design. Born to parents who are farmers, Godwill could not envision a future beyond farming or fishing; a career path which is not viable in his community due to extreme pollution from oil spillage damaging traditional agricultural and fishing livelihoods. This has significantly contributed to the prevailing cause of financial poverty in the Niger Delta pushing young men to be involved in illegal albeit violent activities to generate income to support themselves and their families.
With the skills acquired at the ICT Training Centre in his community, Godwill has now moved to the state capital where he works as an IT officer making a living for himself. He has seen a change in his life and feels different about himself and what he can do in the future. ‘I am independent, I don’t need to ask my parents for money for little things, I can now take care of myself. My goal is to go to university to study computer science this year’. He advices young people in his community who want to succeed and make a good living for themselves to enrol for the program and take advantage of the unique opportunity. ‘This training will give them the opportunity to change their life, their family and their community’.
Stories like this inspired SING’s Code3 Project which is targeted at exposing the minds of children to the infinite possibilities of coding through Creative Intelligence Technology. We believe that every child regardless of their background should be given the opportunity to be leaders in the 21st Century World of endless possibilities.
We need your help to be able to reach a larger spread of children in these communities. Kindly donate to enrol a child in the SING Code3 Program.
