One of the flagship projects of the Sustainable Initiatives for Nurturing Growth (SING) Nigeria, the “Digital Skills Development Centre” in Opume Community, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa state is set to undergo major renovation works. The ICT and Library projects were well intentioned to bridge the digital gap in rural communities, and as well, serve as an empowerment scheme for underserved children so they can favourably compete with their counterparts elsewhere.
Over the period of existence, these projects have lived up to expectations in serving the beneficiary communities; with several success stories from enrolees, especially how the projects have launched them into a career path. The testimony of 20 years old Godwill Okadu is one of those success stories that easily resonates in our appraisal of the SING ICT training programme where he made the following submissions:
“If not for this program, I would have been farming in the village. I would not have wanted more out of life. I never had any interest in computers, I had no idea what a computer looked like as l had never seen one neither had the opportunity to touch a computer ever come up until I was enrolled for the training. This program really changed my life for the better, completely….”
Today, we have many Godwills in Opume community as a result of the Digital Skills Development Centre, and it represents our strategic efforts at the SING Nigeria to serve the underprivileged in line with one of our thematic areas of developing human capacity for relevance in the current global environment that is largely shifting towards ICT.
The soon to begin renovation works at the centre is in a bid to expand and upgrade facilities at the Opume centre for a more robust training. The Foundation, at the completion of renovation works which will focus on uplifting the structures and facilities, is poised to serve the community better.
At this important stage in human history where there is an increasing dependence on digital skills and creative intelligence, we strongly believe that these renovation and technical overhaul activities at the centre will further inspire interest of the community in ICT.
At SING, we remain committed and focused in our mission of building a society that is free from the shackles of poverty, where every person has dignity and an equal opportunity to grow; and we trust that you will partner with us in making this a reality for the good of our society.
